| Formal five-crested (crossed daikon!) man's silk kimono jacket (haori). Shown with lining side out, revealing a pattern of layered paintings - a teahouse in the snow, pine and mountains, and a shakuhachi flute as well. Beautiful calligraphy on the mountain scene. The outer fabric is a plain black silk, except for the five crests. A flaw in the printing (?) at the top left side, but seems to be original to the design. |

As far as we can tell, this man's haori lining names
several of the prominent universities
in Japan. Waseda,
Hosei, Rikkio, and Keio are listed, but there are other names
we can't explain. Outer
jacket fabric is a brown silk, and the lining is a smooth silk
of bands in gold,
brown and teal, with the names and emblems in cream on top. A
small hole in the
outer layer but otherwise very good condition. |

Traditional kimono jacket
shown above with the lining side out, where you'll see a printed design of
what seems to be endcap roof
tiles, or portions of them. (Click
here to see the real thing.) While the lining is very nice
and makes the jacket reversible, the outer jacket is just as
nice, with a tiny grid
pattern in brown and gold, all on a shiny, soft, smooth silk.
No crest on this jacket, just
plain, but it is still a striking garment, none the less. |
