Full of color and movement (courtesy of
the strong diagonally-set
patterning), this elaborately
decorated kimono was originally for a young girl to wear
to the temple on the Seven-Five-Three (Shichi-Go-San) Festival
in November. This is a crepey silk - typical of these kinds of
kimonos in the 1950's - with
several layers of design (water, florals,
and tiny auspicious images) and embellishment (note silver
painted highlights on many of the floral designs). Fine to
wear, better for display! |

"Ceremonial
Koi " Boy's Kimono SET- $250 |

A truly amazing set, given the excellent
condition and probable age (over 50 years old). This is a boy's
kimono and underkimono
set in a light summer ro silk with a wonderful painted
scene on the back that features two jumping koi, one
arched above the
other. Hand
stitched, with embroidery detail in silver
on the fins or around the eyes,
and in green
on the ocean rocks that border the scene on each sleeve.
Note the five arrow root flower crests
and the protective
emblems at the front ties. |

"Taisho Purple"
Girl's Kimono - $150 |

|
Fantastic young
girls' kimono probably from the Taisho Period of the 1920's,
though there is no way to be sure. It's our guess based on the
color and design, as well as the silk
crepe and artistry of the yuzen process. In great shape for
its age but much more appropriate for display Bright colors,
festive florals,
and a soft touch to the silk. Note the tacked tucks at the shoulders
and the waist that can be let out for more length at hem and
sleeves. |

Noshi and Hawk
Boy's Kimono- $200 |

Wonderfully festive design
of a pair of hawks fluttering among a bundle of ribbons (called
noshi ) that arch
across the back of this boy's ceremonial kimono. The background
is a deep blue , not the more common black with a wide cream
bank around the middle section. Muted
colors on the ribbons , each with its own design. A wonderful
display piece,
but there is some slight fading at the seams (from years of storage)
and a few blemishes
on the underkimono
which comes with it. These kimonos are draped
and tied over a newborn when they go to the temple for their
first blessing (and photo op) and later for the San-Go-Shi (3-5-7)
holiday. |

This is a kimono is called a miyamairi,
traditionally given to a newborn boy for photos and then worn
at the 7-5-3 Festival. Masculine images, often a hawk, are usually featured on
the back. This one shows two
hawks, both with silver embroidered embellishment. Beautifully
colored blue waves add more value and charm, as does the
light blue sky. Five crests make this a very formal kimono as
do the other lucky
symbols (mallet, bamboo, etc.) |

in a very small size for a young oub - a young monk? It's small
enough for a toddler and better
for display than for wearing, though it is in like-new condition.
The front and back panels are attached only at the shoulder,
but the sleeves are long and wide, with a purple
and white tassel sewn
in at the edges and tied
at the bottom. Bright
green with other bold
colors and lots of gold. Lined in cotton gauze. A
red stamp - not readable to us - appears at the inside neck. |

in great condition for its age (perhaps the 1940's?) make this
